PAN Amsterdam 2025: Arjan Spannenburg Displays Layered Emotion and Serene Strength

From November 2 to 9, 2025, the RAI in Amsterdam will once again be the epicenter of art, antiques, and design. Amidst the eclectic splendor of the 38th edition of PAN Amsterdam, photographer Arjan Spannenburg presents a selection of works that invite visitors to introspection and connection.

For this edition, Spannenburg returns with a carefully chosen series that underscores his signature style of profound layering and emotional intensity. His photographs, often painted with light, balance on the border between classical painting and contemporary photography, making them a perfect fit for the unique blend of disciplines offered by the PAN.

Highlights of the 2025 Collection

Spannenburg’s presentation focuses on several powerful images revolving around themes such as reflection, vulnerability, and inner conflict:

  • RECONNECTION (120x80 cm and 60x40 cm in stock) This monumental work is central to the collection. As the title suggests, 'RECONNECTION' explores the need for connection with oneself, with another, or with a greater whole. The image invites a moment of stillness amidst the fair’s hustle, showcasing Spannenburg’s mastery in using atmospheric light to create an almost palpable emotion.

  • JOHN THE BAPTIST (60x40 cm) In a nod to the Old Masters and their religious iconography, this work presents a classic figure in an unexpectedly intimate and detailed manner. The focus on the lamb with John the Baptist a symbol of innocence and sacrifice—brings forward a universal theme of vulnerability and humanity's role in nature.

  • SAINT SEBASTIAN (60x40 cm) This piece is a powerful reinterpretation of Saint Sebastian, often depicted as a symbol of endurance and resilience. Spannenburg's version is certain to balance physical vulnerability with the inner, almost serene strength that his models radiate, in a composition reminiscent of Caravaggio.

  • RESTRAINT (60x90 cm) With the title 'RESTRAINT,' the photographer addresses a current theme. This work promises to be an intense look at the boundaries we impose on ourselves or that are imposed on us. The composition and lighting will emphasize the internal tension and the quiet determination of the model.
